Our craft

Built slowly, by hand, in Vietnam

Crafting timeless elegance through Vietnamese lacquer art.

Lacquer from Vietnam

A material built by time and hand

Lacquerware is not manufactured. It is grown — coat over coat — until the surface holds light like still water.

Every form begins with a prepared base. Artisans then brush on natural resin tapped from the lacquer trees of Northern Vietnam — pale and milky when it is collected, darkening as it reacts with the air and slowly hardens.

The work is a rhythm of repetition: apply, dry, hand-sand, and begin again — sometimes more than twelve times. Each pass builds depth rather than simply covering the surface, while early layers are reinforced so the piece will never crack.

Decorative materials — mother-of-pearl, eggshell, gold leaf, buffalo horn — are sealed within the lacquer rather than laid on top, becoming part of the surface itself. A final polishing leaves it smooth, almost soft to the touch, with a depth that shifts gently under light.

Built layer by layer — beautiful, durable, and meaningful.

How it is made

Quiet stages, many patient hands

From a bare surface to a mirror-deep finish, every MG.GIFT piece moves through the same unhurried sequence — work that can span weeks, or even months.

Surface Preparation01

Surface Preparation

Bases are hand-sanded with fine sandpaper to remove dust, rough fibres and small imperfections — especially along joints and inner edges — for the perfectly prepared foundation lacquer demands.

Foundation Building02

Foundation Building

Gaps and uneven areas are filled with a special putty, then hand-sanded and sealed in cycles repeated many times — the smoothest possible base, so the final lacquer shows real clarity and depth.

Lacquering03

Lacquering

Thin, even coats are sprayed in a controlled room, then dried, inspected and lightly sanded. The spray–dry–inspect–sand cycle is repeated until a stable, deep and even lacquer surface is built.

Polishing & Finishing04

Polishing & Finishing

The piece is polished by hand until it is smooth and almost soft to the touch, with a living depth that changes gently as the light moves across it.

The materials

Precious by nature

We work only with natural, sustainable materials that age beautifully — each chosen for the way it catches and holds the light, then sealed within the lacquer itself.

Natural Lacquer

Natural Lacquer

Resin tapped from Northern Vietnam's lacquer trees — pale and milky, darkening as it cures, applied in a dozen patient layers.

Mother-of-Pearl

Mother-of-Pearl

Iridescent shell, cut and set into the lacquer to shift colour as it moves — part of the surface, not laid on top.

Buffalo Horn

Buffalo Horn

The heart of our Spring Whisper line — natural buffalo horn paired with lacquer for an organic, refined, elegant feel.

Gold Leaf

Gold Leaf

Genuine gold beaten to gossamer thinness and laid by hand for a warm, living glow within the finish.
