A walk through the patient rhythm of building, drying and sanding that gives lacquerware its depth.
Ask any artisan how long a piece takes, and the answer is never a number — it's a season. Natural lacquer cannot be rushed; it dries on its own terms, and every layer must fully cure before the next is laid.
A typical piece receives more than twelve coats. Between each, the surface is hand-sanded until it is glass-smooth, and early layers are reinforced so the finished work will never crack.
It is slow, deliberate work — and that is exactly the point. The patience is what you feel when you finally hold the finished piece, smooth and almost soft to the touch.
